Inventory as Risk Management Tool

Starr and Miller (1962) and Lee et al (1997) claim that inventory acts as a buffer that reduces SC risk. Inventory, although costly and SCM-heretical, lessens supply-side risk. In SCs, transportation and quality issues can thwart well-theorized systems. Inventory on hand can provide continuity that overly lean systems cannot (Jones and Riley, 1985).
